Edinburgh

A capital built on volcanic rock — Old Town closes, Georgian terraces and one of the great walking cities.

Why go

Edinburgh rewards walking more than planning. The medieval Old Town runs downhill from the castle along the Royal Mile, threaded with closes and stairs, while the New Town below is a masterclass in Georgian symmetry. Between them sit gardens, a dormant volcano you can climb before breakfast, and a food and bar scene that has quietly become one of the best in the UK. Most visitors need two full days; three lets you slow down.
