Old Town Closes on Foot

The Royal Mile makes sense once someone shows you what is behind the doorways.

The Old Town's closes — narrow stepped passages running off the Royal Mile — are where Edinburgh's history actually happened: overcrowded tenements, plague, the Enlightenment and the vaults beneath the bridges. A good guided walk turns a busy tourist street into a legible city, and takes about two hours at an unhurried pace.

Our notes

Do this on your first morning. Everything else in the city reads better afterwards.
